How To Poem?
Where’d it go?
I know I left it over there
with my hair
Did someone take it when I wasn’t
looking?
Now I’ll have to fake it
for I’ve made a promise
and people are watching
Watching me
This is not good
let’s see if I can remember:
1) Avoid rhyme
most of the time
for if the meter is strong
it sounds sing-song
2) Absolutely avoid all alliteration
for folks
friend and foe
find it fluffy and frustrating
3) Make an effort towards clarity
for the hamper of your soul
is not necessarily
where others toss their laundry
4) Subjects to avoid:
Love, angst, joy,
sorrow, loneliness, god,
leaves, ennui, weather,
war and national holidays
5) Practice always
On napkins
shirtsleeves
small children
what ever is available
Practice practice practice
It may not actually
make perfect
but scribbles kept
eventually equal anthology
6) Finally: NEVER poem in public!
